I am currently a 21 year old swimmer for a Division 1 collegiate program. I began swimming at the age of five, and have swum year-round since the age of thirteen. My training often requires swimming over thirty miles a week as well as dry land exercises and weight training. Fortunately, and largely because of the expertise of the massage therapists at Body Destinations, my swimming career has been injury free.

A technique based on the theory that we have points on our hands and feet that correspond to every part of our bodies. It is an ancient scientific art based on the premise that there are zones and reflex points in the hands and feet that correspond to every organ, system, and gland in our bodies. Benefits - By stimulating these specific points on the feet, (which have over 7,000 nerve endings) it helps promote balance and an emotional sense of peace and well-being resulting in stress reduction which causes physiological changes in the body.

My first massage taught me more than I ever imagined. Over the next few visits, I learned not only about the various muscles involved in my swimming, but how many of them were overcompensating for each other because of my rigorous training regime. I learned techniques and exercises to help maintain my health and wellness and have continued to visit Body Destinations a couple of times a year to keep myself in top form.

Training for fifteen years can not only keep you fit, but it can also wear you down. Most of my peers have had to take time off or have had to leave the sport due to injury, but the therapists at Body Destinations have helped to keep me healthy and in top form. The knowledge that the therapists have instilled in me sparked my interest in muscles and the body and has inspired me to enter the field of athletic training and physical therapy.

I started working with Brandi and Sandy of Body Destinations while working though injuries in the NHL. They helped keep me on the ice and reduced my recovery time between games. Several times during my career I battled with an injury and was sent down to the minors to rehab. During this time I worked closely with Brandi and Sandy of Body Destinations. I have since been part of the 09 Stanley cup win with my team mates of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and I continue to receive massage therapy as part of my regular training.

Sport & Trigger Point Therapy

A first aid pressure technique used in the removal of pain. It is used to stretch soft tissue and muscles. Due to stress, illness and/or overuse, the body creates Trigger Points (knots), also known as a spasm. They occur when fatigued muscle fibers tangle and remain contracted. By using direct pressure on and around these trigger points, circulation is increased and painful knots are broken down. Benefits - While using deep pressure and stretching the muscles, you have a greater relief of pain and spasm.

Lymphedema Treatment

A lymphatic massage session for women who develop lymphedema after surgery for breast cancer starts with light massage on the surface of the skin of the neck. Lymphatic massage is also indicated in other areas where lymphedema can occur (neck, head, legs, abdomen, groin)  The therapist gently rubs, strokes, taps or pushes the skin in directions that follow the structure of the lymphatic system so that accumulated lymph fluid can drain through proper channels. Lymphatic drainage is very gentle, is not painful and doesn’t have a stimulating effect. Each session lasts from 45 to 60 minutes.  The best results occur when the therapist and patient work together to control the lymphedema.  Instructions are given for home treatment between office visits.
